PhotoVoice

PhotoVoice is a participatory research and storytelling approach that empowers individuals to share their lived experiences through photography and narrative. By capturing images that reflect their personal journeys, challenges, and hopes, participants help bring visibility to issues that often remain unseen or misunderstood. At Drug Free America Foundation (DFAF), PhotoVoice is used as a powerful tool to elevate voices from prevention, treatment, and recovery communities—transforming personal stories into catalysts for awareness, dialogue, and policy change. By combining art, research, and community engagement, PhotoVoice helps advance DFAF’s mission to prevent substance use, support recovery, and build healthier, drug-free communities.

Healing Through Art

Healing Through Art is a community storytelling initiative led by Drug Free America Foundation that uses photography and creative expression to amplify the voices of individuals impacted by substance use and recovery. Through a research approach known as PhotoVoice, participants capture images that represent their experiences, challenges, and moments of hope. These images, paired with personal narratives, help bring visibility to stories that are often overlooked while creating opportunities for dialogue, understanding, and healing.

Empowering Mothers To build Drug-Free Families

From January to June 2025, Drug Free America Foundation implemented a PhotoVoice project across Florida designed to amplify the voices of mothers, mothers-to-be, and women affected by a loved one’s substance use. Led by researcher Mulka Nisic, PhD, the initiative provided women with tools to share their lived experiences through photography and storytelling—highlighting both the challenges and strengths involved in building drug-free, recovery-ready families.
