Empowering Mothers to Build Drug-Free Families (2025)
From January to June 2025, Drug Free America Foundation implemented a PhotoVoice project across Florida designed to amplify the voices of mothers, mothers-to-be, and women affected by a loved one’s substance use. Led by researcher Mulka Nisic, PhD, the initiative provided women with tools to share their lived experiences through photography and storytelling—highlighting both the challenges and strengths involved in building drug-free, recovery-ready families.
Through guided sessions, participants reflected on their recovery journeys and explored the impact of stigma, family relationships, and the supports that help sustain recovery. Using photographs to document moments from their daily lives, the mothers explored three key themes that emerged from their work: motivation, stigma, and barriers. These images and narratives illustrated both the obstacles families face and the resilience and determination that drive women to create healthier environments for themselves and their children.
The project combined creative expression with participatory research, bringing women together in structured discussions to analyze their photographs and narratives. Their stories were ultimately shared through a virtual exhibition reaching more than 500 community members, helping to increase awareness, reduce stigma, and inspire hope for other families affected by substance use.
Project Impact
This PhotoVoice initiative created a safe and empowering space for mothers to reflect on their experiences and share their stories with others. Through photography and dialogue, participants explored themes such as motivation for change, stigma surrounding substance use and recovery, and barriers to accessing support and stability.
Participants reported increased confidence in speaking about their experiences and advocating for drug-free families. The process not only strengthened personal narratives but also helped build a sense of connection and solidarity among women with shared lived experiences, including recovery and supporting loved ones with substance use challenges.
By elevating authentic voices and experiences, the project helped shift community conversations toward compassion, understanding, and support for families impacted by substance use.

Explore the Exhibit
The PhotoVoice exhibition brings together images and personal narratives created by the participants. Each photograph represents a moment, place, or feeling that reflects the journey of recovery and the commitment to building healthier futures for their families.
Together, these stories offer a powerful reminder that recovery is possible, families can heal, and communities play an important role in supporting both.
We invite you to explore the exhibit and experience the resilience, courage, and hope captured through the lens of these mothers.
