Today marks three important global observances that remind us why prevention matters.

June 26 is recognized as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking and also marks the release of the 2026 World Drug Report, highlighting emerging trends, ongoing challenges, and the importance of evidence-based prevention worldwide.

It also marks the launch of World Resiliency Week 2026, a global initiative that encourages individuals, families, communities, and organizations to strengthen resilience through practical, everyday actions.

To celebrate this year’s launch, Drug Free America Foundation is proud to share a special collaborative episode of Pathways to Prevention in partnership with the Dalgarno Institute and their Unnecessary Harm Podcast.

The episode features Shane Varcoe, Dave Closson, and Jen Schneeman, three of the architects behind this year’s World Resiliency Week campaign, as they explore this year’s theme:

The Pulse of Resilience: Fall. Feel. Rise.

Rather than viewing resilience as simply “pushing through” adversity, the conversation highlights resilience as a skill that can be developed through awareness, healthy coping strategies, meaningful relationships, and practical tools that help individuals navigate life’s challenges.

Throughout the discussion, listeners will discover:

  • Why resilience is a critical protective factor in preventing substance misuse
  • How stress, trauma, and nervous system health influence our daily lives
  • Practical strategies for recognizing emotions instead of suppressing them
  • Why healthy coping skills matter for youth and adults alike
  • How communities can foster resilience before challenges become crises
  • The importance of creating hope-focused, strengths-based prevention messages

One of the most powerful themes throughout the episode is that resilience isn’t about perfection.

As Jen Schneeman explains, resilience is about learning to recognize where we are, resetting in the moment, recharging throughout the day, and restoring ourselves so we can continue moving forward. Dave Closson reminds listeners that resilience isn’t simply “embracing the suck,” but responding to life’s challenges with awareness, kindness, and practical tools.

These messages closely align with the mission of Drug Free America Foundation. Prevention is about more than avoiding harmful behaviors—it is about equipping people with the knowledge, confidence, and resilience they need to make healthy decisions throughout life.

As today’s World Drug Report reminds us of the evolving global drug landscape, World Resiliency Week offers an equally important reminder: one of the strongest protective factors we can build is resilience.

We invite you to listen to this special episode and join the global movement to strengthen resilience in our homes, schools, workplaces, and communities.
