Stockholm, Sweden (05/27/10) – On Wednesday, May 25th 2010 at a conference of The World Federation Against Drugs (WFAD), organizers and participants passed a resolution that recognized the tenure of Director Costa, executive director of the United Nation’s Office on Drugs and Crime, and his leadership and commitment to the international community on such issues as terrorism, human trafficking and drug demand reduction.

This resolution further remembered his constructive and comprehensive approach to these issues and called upon the U.N. to appoint a new director that will preserve his legacy to carry on effective global efforts as they relate to the Conventions.

“We need someone to lead UNODC with the same spirit and dedication that Director Costa has demonstrated throughout the years. He has been a catalyst for UNODC, and it will be sad to see him retire. My hope is that UNODC will be guided by someone willing to emulate Director Costa’s efforts with equal enthusiasm, brilliance and experience,” said Calvina Fay, executive director of Drug Free America Foundation and founding board member of WFAD.

“Director Costa has been a worldwide leader and I can certainly speak on behalf of many of my colleagues in drug prevention and policy who anticipate the arrival of a new director who will not only embrace the directives of the Drug Conventions but who will advance Director Costa’s work,” concluded Fay.
