Dude, Where's My Dentures?

When your uncle talks about joint replacement, he may be discussing who is going to retrieve his stash - people over 50 are abusing drugs in record numbers, according to a new survey.  8.5 percent of men and 3.9 percent of women in this age group have used marijuana in the past year.

Older certainly doesn't mean wiser for this group. What they might not know is that the harmful effects of drug use become more pronounced as the body ages, adding up to a greatly increased vulnerability to the health and social problems of substance abuse.
As if the aging baby boomers' impact on the health care system weren't enough, the study indicates a dire need for both more drug prevention and more drug treatment for this age group.
'One toke over the line' doesn't make much sense when you're carrying an AARP membership card.

Problems?

I like how ambiguous this article is. "What they might not know is that the harmful effects of drug use become more pronounced as the body ages, adding up to a greatly increased vulnerability to the health and social problems of substance abuse.
"

What effects are you talking about? You site substance abuse problems, but every drug has different substance abuse problems. If you use meth or crack you might have sores on your face. If you use heroin, you may go into heavy withdrawls if you stop suddenly. What substance abuse problems do you have with marijuana? A larger appitite? laughter? Let's get some common sense.

There is a reaon use of marijuana is going up in all age groups. The misinformation being spread by the governement and DFAF are finally being seen for what it is. Propaganda.

DFPF

Hey DFAF,

I wonder why you don't have a post up about this story:

Despite beefed-up countermeasures, illegal drug use persists in US prisons

http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/wire/sns-ap-us-drugs-behi...

Oh right! The fact that we can't enforce drug prohibition IN PRISON makes the idea of a drug-free American sound risible, as it is.

I Recall....

I recall almost a year ago seeing a representative from DFAF making the claim (on Change.org if I recall correctly) that every claim made on their website is fully cited. Anyone who's been around this site knows this obviously isn't true; and the same goes for this. What evidence do you have that marijuana is more harmful for seniors then for younger people? Yes there has been an increase in usage for older Americans. How is that anything but a testament to the ongoing failure of the war on marijuana? If using in the past year equates to abuse than a vast majority of Americans have an alcohol abuse problem. Perhaps it is in their wisdom they have gained over the years they discovered that marijuana is not the demon it has been portrayed as and it is in fact safer than alcohol for both themselves and society at large. Maybe it was their concern over their "vulnerability to the health and social problems of substance abuse" that lead them to the safer alternative of cannabis. And for that you make them criminals. What evidence do you have that cannabis use is anymore dangerous than alcohol or tobacco use PERIOD? For ANYONE? Time after time you fail to make any sort of case for cannabis prohibition, yet you go to great lengths to see this policy upheld.

dude... why are you so afraid

dude... why are you so afraid of criticism?

Use is not abuse

Why is it that DFAF insists all use is abuse? Surely some of those seniors keep their consumption to reasonable limits during times when they don't have important responsibilities or have to drive.

Why is it that DFAF insists on conflating all drugs and their effects? Marijuana is not toxic like alcohol, tobacco, heroin, or aspirin.

Why is it that DFAF makes cute jokes about marijuana if it's such a seriously dangerous drug? It seems that they've internalized what we as a society already know- marijuana is far from the demon portrayed by 70 years of government-backed propaganda.
