Drug Take Back Programs Spread Across Country

Drug Take Back Programs Spread Across Country

In one day in one county of Florida, law enforcement officials collected 814 pounds of prescription medications through Operation Medicine Cabinet. These kinds of programs are gaining strength, saving the water supply from contamination and helping to prevent prescription drug abuse throughout the country.

A statewide Operation Medicine Cabinet initiative in New Jersey last year amassed over 9,000 pounds of medicine in four hours, and other states are planning similar initiatives to help fight the spike in prescription drug abuse. The Office of National Drug Control Policy recently reported that the rate of prescription drug abuse of painkillers alone has more than quadrupled since 1998.

In response to the success of these state programs, the DEA, along with many other organizations concerned about drug abuse, is sponsoring a nationwide drug take back day on September 25th from 10 am to 2 pm. The DEA's website, www.dea.gov , will be updated continually with locations for medication disposal in your community.

This sounds like a good idea.

Compared to some of the other things you guys advocate, this sounds like a wonderful idea. A few of the good things about it:

-It's voluntary. Nobody is held at gunpoint or thrown in prison, and no property is forcibly confiscated.
-It prevents abuse of prescription drugs, which can be quite dangerous (a fact people often ignore).
-It reduces water contamination.

This is not necessarily something that the government needs to do, and I would prefer that private organizations take over for the government so that we can further reduce taxes, but this is one of the better uses for tax dollars that I've seen recently, in that it might actually make this country a better place.

I come on here regularly as a harsh critic of your policies towards cannabis. Rightfully so I believe. But prescription drug abuse is an area on which we can find some common ground. Instead of wasting resources on eradicating cannabis from the planet earth, you should focus your efforts on campaigns such as this!!
