Broadcast Yourself Getting High?
YouTube is being used by researchers not only for watching videos of puppies falling asleep or otters holding hands but also for studying the effects of a seriously potent drug. Users have been posting videos of themselves getting high on Salvia Divinorum, and it's not a pretty sight, according to the PhD candidate at San Diego State University whose research consisted of watching those videos to study the effects of the drug. Losing control of speech, uncontrollable laughing and convulsions were noted, and 'they didn't look like they were having a terribly good time,' said one researcher.
The Scientist reports that cataloging its effects may guide pharmacologists in discovering uses for the neural receptor targeted by Salvia, but it is a well-studied drug already in both animals and humans. Another question ripe for consideration, though - why would you post a video of yourself on the stuff?

Not sound evaluation
Can you please elaborate about this study by the Ph.d candidate? It seems bizarre to ground your dissertation of evaluating the effects of a drug by watching videos on youtube. There has to be more to this study; or can someone explain why not capturing the effects of drugs in a scientific setting is a acceptable methodology for someone getting their doctorate.
If, for example, they evaluate the effects of a drug in certain settings, then maybe we have some water here. I don't think scientists evaluate the effects of alcohol, the drug itself with concomitant acute intoxication and the like, by going to a frat party.
So insightful!
This post is so insightful! I mean, why WOULD anyone post a video of a salvia trip. I mean, people don't use Facebook to post pictures of them wasted on alcohol, right? That is a totally abnormal thing to do that has never happened in the history of the internet.
Or maybe young people are naive and do silly or stupid things.
Umm...Have you BEEN on the internet?!
Yeah, if you're like me i wouldn't want anyone filming me if i were using salvia. You never know who's digging up dirt on you. It may come back and bite you in the ass when you apply for job. But seriosuly now, theres NOTHING normal about what people post on the internet. To even venture to call this "abonormal" only shows readers how little time you've spent exploring the internet. Everything's abnormal on the internet, hence only "normal" things are abnormal.
And by the way, yes, people post pictures of themselves getting wasted on Facebook. How old are you anyway? It sounds like you're old, given the naivety you exhibit on the topic of the internet.
Young people may naive and do silly things, but nothing compares to the naivety and silly things the older generations do under the guise of wisdom and maturation. I mean, some people. You'd think they were overgrown children.
